When we first launched the service, our users could verify their identity with a phone call, text message, or the Duo mobile app. Since its initial introduction, more secure, phishing resistant methods of authentication, such as verified push notifications and USB security keys, have become available.
Therefore, ITS has begun to “retire” the more insecure methods. Phone calls, which were not a common option, were discontinued this past spring for all users. Now we are planning to end SMS text message authentication over the next four months. SMS text authentication will be discontinued for staff on October 20th and over winter break for faculty and students. Several weeks before the scheduled change, we will email the impacted individual directly to alert them, inform them of alternatives, and provide support. Below is a draft of the message to staff.
