Ownerless OneDrive Cleanup

ITS has started the process of closing OneDrive accounts that no longer have an owner.

Typically, Microsoft 365 accounts will automatically close when an individual leaves the University. In a few cases, the OneDrive sites did not close as expected. This error seems to have occurred most frequently if a person moved from UConn to UConn Health. Although the owner no longer has access to the site, it persists, and the sharing links still work (if a file was shared with others, they can still access the file).

These abandoned accounts are a security concern and consume a portion of the University’s pooled storage. Therefore, we began the process to close them.
Starting today, December 5th, the files in these accounts are read-only. This means that people who still need access to view the files can still view them but not make changes. If you or someone in your area encounters a read-only file, they should contact the Technology Support Center (techsupport@uconn.edu) to have the account unlocked. ITS will then work with the user to move the necessary file(s) into SharePoint, and re-lock the OneDrive site.

On March 30, 2026, the ownerless sites will be closed, and the contents within them deleted.
