Improving Collaboration with UConn Health in Microsoft 365

UConn and UConn Health maintain separate Microsoft 365 environments, which means accounts, data, security, and compliance are managed independently. As a result, users from one environment are treated as external guests in the other and consequently, have limited access to resources and features.

Colleagues between UConn and UConn Health need to be able to collaborate efficiently and effectively. Therefore, ITS and UConn Health IT are establishing a trusted relationship between the two Microsoft 365 environments (i.e., forming a multi-tenant organization) so that we can work together as one enterprise.

We are starting the process by syncing faculty and staff information between the two environments this month; UConn Health students will be synced at a later date.

After this change, UConn and UConn Health employees will be able to:

  • Search for people across the two environments. UConn Heath accounts will have “- UConn Health” after the display name.
  • View each other’s free/busy status in calendars
  • Add each other to Teams and Groups
  • Share SharePoint and OneDrive files more easily

Some UConn Health employees have mailboxes or accounts in both environments. When you search for their name in Microsoft 365, both accounts may appear in the results – once as a UConn Health employee and once as a UConn employee. Choosing the correct account matters when you’re sharing files. To avoid authentication and access issues, files should be shared with the recipient’s preferred account.
