NetID Password Recovery Updates

On August 21st, ITS will implement two updates to the NetID password recovery process to facilitate self-service and enhance security.

If a UConn user forgets their NetID password, they currently have two options. They can go to netid.uconn.edu and use the reset option if they have added a personal email address or mobile number for password recovery. If they do not have this information added to their account, they must schedule an appointment with the Technology Support Center and work with a technician to reset it.

Resetting a password with recovery options (phone or email) on netid.uconn.edu is the fastest and most convenient method for users. To enable widespread use of this option, people who do not have recovery information for their NetID account will begin to receive prompts to add it when they log in via Single Sign On. The notification links directly to the NetID Management portal so that they can easily enter the required information. Users may choose to ignore the prompt for up to 30 days, but after 30 days, they must add their recovery information in order to sign in.

ITS is also replacing the manual password reset process aided by a technician with a new self-service verification process provided by Trusona, a company that provides identity protection and proofing services. Instead of contacting the Technology Support Center, users who do not have password recovery options set will click a button on netid.uconn.edu to start a session with Trusona. Users will enter a personal phone number, which can be an international number, and then Trusona will send a secure link to this phone. With this link, they’ll be prompted to scan their driver’s license or passport. This document along with their phone and location will be verified against DMV and carrier records. Once the identity check succeeds, users can reset their password. If the identify check fails or if the user needs additional assistance, the Technology Support Center will provide support.
