Change to Reporting Method for Phishing

We previously recommended that faculty, staff, and students forward any email that they suspected was a phishing scam to reportphishing@uconn.edu. This automatically creates a ticket on the user’s behalf.  A Technology Support Center technician reviews the message and responds, often with standard guidance.

Last year, we enabled the “Report” button in Microsoft Outlook as an alternative reporting mechanism.  When a recipient uses this button to report a suspicious email, ITS is alerted of the potential threat and uses this information to help improve email protection technologies and strategies.  A ticket is not created, and there is no independent assessment of every message.  The Report button has been very effective, and it is a more efficient way to handle phishing messages.

We have observed that the overwhelming majority of our community accurately identifies phishing messages and that the separate assessment is much less valuable than it once was.  Therefore, we are retiring reportphishing@uconn.edu on November 1st.  Messages sent to reportphishing@uconn.edu will receive an automatic response with information about using the report button and some standard guidance.  Anyone who needs assistance may contact the Technology Support Center directly.
