Welcome to the University of Connecticut! Below is an overview of the essential technology tools available to you. These are the basic services you will need to get started at UConn. For a more extensive list of services available, please see the ITS Service Catalog.

Digital Identity

Your digital identity provides you access to most online services at UConn. The tools available on netid.uconn.edu enable you to manage and protect your identity.

NetID: Your unique Network Identifier (NetID) gives you access to most online resources at UConn. Faculty and staff receive an activation message when they first join UConn.

Password management: When you activate your NetID, you will also set a password and recovery options. Return to netid.uconn.edu at any time to reset your password (if forgotten) or change it. Please note: Every employee at the University of Connecticut is obligated to protect access to university systems and data by safeguarding their login credentials. Never share your credentials to allow others access to University systems

Display Name: By default, UConn systems will show your legal name. You can use the Display Name tool to modify the name that is shown in some directories, such as phonebook.uconn.edu.

Two-factor authentication (2FA): 2FA provides your NetID credentials with another layer of protection. When you login to a protected service, you verify your identity with your NetID credentials and a device in your possession. This service is provided to faculty, staff, and student employees and is required to authenticate into Core-CT, the state’s financial and employment system.

Email and Calendaring

At UConn, University email accounts and calendars for faculty and staff are hosted on Microsoft Office 365 and on G Suite for students. Although official email and calendar services are different for faculty/staff and students, everyone can access the additional applications included with O365 and G Suite.

Outlook (Desktop Client): Faculty and staff should have the Outlook desktop client installed on their workstations. If not, you can set it up so that you just need to launch the app to access email.

Outlook Web Access: You can access your email through a browser (e.g., Chrome, Internet Explorer). Click the Office 365 login button on the homepage of email.uconn.edu or the "Launch Office 365" button on the service page. Login with your official @uconn.edu email address and NetID password. Once logged in, you will see tiles that display the apps available to you. Through this portal, faculty, staff, and students can access available apps.

Gmail: After you set up your G Suite account for the first time, you can access Gmail accounts at http://gmail.uconn.edu.

Mobile Access: You can set up Gmail and Outlook on your mobile device.

Shared Mailboxes and Calendars: Faculty, staff, and student employees may be granted access to shared mailboxes and calendars by their departmental liaison. 

Threat Prevention: The threat prevention service reduces exposure to security risks, such as malware, viruses, and phishing attacks. Email filters detect and manage incoming mail that could be spam or phishing messages. Attachments and links are also scanned and unsafe material blocked.  Please note: Although technology solutions improve security, good judgement remains your best defense against phishing and other scams.

File Storage

UConn offers multiple solutions for safe, secure file storage. These solutions are backed up to prevent data loss and facilitate file sharing.

Personal Storage: These options are ideal for individuals.

  • Microsoft OneDrive: Faculty, staff, and students have access to OneDrive via Office 365. It provides unlimited, virtual file storage and options for sharing files. OneDrive is typically used by individuals for their files.
  • Google Drive: Faculty, staff, and students have access to Google Drive via G Suite. It provides virtual file storage up to 15GBs. Faculty and staff need to create an account to use this service.
  • Personal (P) Drive: All faculty, staff, and students receive a personal directory to store university files that are intended from individual use. When you are no longer affiliated with the University, these files are deleted.

Departmental Storage: These options are ideal for teams or groups of employees.

  • Departmental (Q) Drive: Faculty, staff, and student employees may be granted access to a shared directory to store files accessible to the group. The files on the Q: drive persist, even if one person with access leaves the University.
  • Microsoft SharePoint: Faculty, staff, and students also have access to SharePoint, which has overlapping functionality with OneDrive. SharePoint is a collaboration tool that includes document storage. It is often used by teams who are working on the same documents and products.

Network connections

Wired: The UConn wired network will give you the fastest connection and does not require authentication. If a network jack in your area does not work or is blocked with a small plug, contact the ITS Help Center to have it activated.

Wireless: You can connect to the wireless network three ways:

  • UConn-Secure: If you are affiliated with UConn and have a NetID, use this connection while on campus.
  • UConn-Guest: This connection is intended for people who do not have a NetID.
  • Eduroam: UConn participates in Eduroam, which is a secure access service for a consortium of academic institution. You login to this service when you are at another institution with your NetID@uconn.edu and your NetID password.

Remote Access: Faculty, staff, and students can connect to network resources while off-campus and outside the UConn network.

Software

You can access university-licensed software at software.uconn.edu. Software is available for download, via online sources (UConn AnyWare), and at computer labs.

Workstations

For areas that are supported by ITS, we coordinate the purchase and setup of a new desktop or laptop with your department/unit.  We can also schedule a time with you to set up your email, printers and any special configurations. Your workstation will have Office 2016, Adobe Reader, Chrome, and Firefox installed on it. As a centrally-managed workstation, critical security patches and other updates will be automatically installed.  If you have a university-owned laptop, it will have Direct Access enabled, which gives you access to your P: and Q: drives when off-campus.

IT Support

IT support is available to all faculty, staff, students, and alums via the ITS Help Center.  They can provide you with assistance via chat, phone, or email. The site also includes a collection of support articles that cover common how-to and troubleshooting requests.
