Virtualization/Infrastructure as a Service

ITS provides approved customers a virtual machine (VM) with customized storage, RAM, processors, and administration rights.

Some key features of the service include:

  • The ability to run Virtualized Microsoft Windows and Linux (usually Red Hat) servers
  • An alternative to purchasing the physical hardware for servers
  • Users can gain console access by accessing vCenter through an authorized Citrix account

UConn AnyWare

ITS delivers virtualized software to the university through UConn AnyWare.

Software can be accessed remotely through either Apps or Desktop. Both give you access to the same software but differ in delivery. With AnyWare Apps, you select only the applications you wish to use. With AnyWare Desktop (formerly Skybox), you connect to a Microsoft Windows virtual desktop that includes all the available software.

VPN

ITS provides a VPN service that provides secure, encrypted connection when you are accessing restricted systems on the University network from off-campus locations. While most University resources do not require a VPN (e.g., email, Core-CT, OneDrive), certain protected resources require a secure connection to UConn for access. Check with the resource administrator to verify if the VPN is required.

Secure Remote Desktop Access

Using technology built into Windows computers by Microsoft, any faculty, staff, or student can access their University-owned computers remotely through SRDA without using the VPN. The SRDA setup is limited to Windows computers, but can be accessed from different operating systems, such as Mac OSX or Android.
